Offered for sale is a rare and highly collectible ceramic wall plate/charger hand painted by esteemed and famous South African artist the late Robert Hodgins. This charger is titled " A philosopher of the Enlightenment " and dated 2007. The plate is signed on the back with Robert Hodgins signature in cursive script as well as his full name in block lettering and a copyright emblem. The plate also has an incised signature by Retief Van Wyk who was the potter responsible for throwing the blank charger which Hodgins decorated. Hodgins was a prolific and gifted artist who taught Fine Art at Wits University. He was a late flowering artist who gained fame and acclaim towards the end of his life and posthumously . He is primarily known as a painter although he also produced limited edition prints, drawings and ceramic sculptures and platters. In the last 10 years of his life he collaborated with Retief van Dyk who was based in Pretoria to design and decorate ceramic items including 3-dimensional sculptures and hand painted platters and bowls. Retief Van Dyk subsequently authored and published a coffee table book on Robert Hodgins ceramic art. This platter is a typical and fine example of the artists quirky style and skillful use of brushwork and economy of line . The bewigged/peruked man with bloated face ,weak chin and stout neck readily brings to mind images/portraits of learned intellectuals and philosophers from the so called Enlightenment Age or Age of Reason from the late 17th to the 18th Century, an age which questioned with role of the monarchy and church and which is widely regarded as the foundation of modern democracy . Luminaries from this age include philosophers such as Kant, Hume, Voltaire, Rousseau, Diderot, scientists such as Isaac Newton etc.
