Offered for sale is a rare Japanese export ceramic bowl dating from the 1930's known as an Awaji ceramic piece the name of the pottery deriving from the place name where the kilns and workshops were based. These items were made for export to Europe and the United States and adopted the vibrants colours and designs and bold shapes fashionable in the Art Deco period. These ceramics are hard to find and keenly collected in the USA and Europe where they fetch high prices on auction. This item is made from buff/off white coloured clay/earthenware and is hand painted with bright enamels. The bowl has a foliate organic shape with serrated upper border resembling the head of a flower with petals. The exterior is glazed in a satin black with scalloped patterns left in relief and the interior decorated with a radiating motif of yellows, mauve-blue ,brick red and black with a star like motif in the well of the bowl. The bold pattern of coloured dots around the border of the bowl is particularly fetching and eye catching.
