Kaffie Pretorius was born on the West Coast in 1941. After finishing her schooling in Stellenbosch, she completed her studies as a teacher at the University of Stellenbosch. She has worked at several art schools, amongst them an art school in Los Angeles during 1976. Back in Stellenbosch she also studied for a year under André van Zyl at the Michaelis School of Fine Arts in Cape Town.
In 1989 she spent four months painting in Amsterdam. After a number of group exhibitions she held her first solo exhibition in Stellenbosch during 1985. Further exhibitions followed in 1987, 1989, and 1992. Some of her favourites amongst the great masters are Bonnard and Gaugin because they were essentially colourists.
Kaffie's paintings combine an earthiness with intuition and emotion. Her work depicts the people and environment of the West Coast where she grew up. Leading motives in her work are the following: the flower, symbol of beauty and transitoriness; the goat, a magical figure; the fish, symbol of earthiness, simplicity and of course food; as well as the bird, symbol of freedom and space.
She does not wish to make 'statement art', except to express man's connectedness with the earth.
