The Katanga Province, the richest province of Belgian Congo (Zaire, DRC) for a brief period between 1960 and 1963 declared independence from the rest of the Congo before being re annexed into the country in 1963.

In 1960 an unknown mintage of 1 and 5 Francs were minted. These coins are now rare, all being destroyed when annexation took place.
