Although her paintings today fetch auction prices only exceeded by works by Irma Stern, Maggie Laubser was almost 60 when Meintjes published this monograph on her life and work. This was just 16 years after her first exhibition in 1928, the late start being accounted for by her long years of study, mainly at the Slade in London, and her early concentration on drawing. She painting until her death in 1973 at the age of 87.
