Offered for sale is a highly collectible and hard to find ceramic/earthenware Mod cat figurine designed by famous Swedish ceramicist Dorothy Clough and made for the company Upsala Ekeby in Central Sweden in the late 1950's or early 60's. This uber stylish cat is made from a dark bodied clay glazed in an opaque white and hand painted in an eye catching palette of pastel colours with the body of the cat in turquoise embellished with blue-mauve polka dots , black accenting for whiskers, tail and claws, blue eyes outlined in yellow and pink accents on the mouth and inner ears. The cat has a white bib in a repeat diamond/fishbone pattern. The base is signed with the artists initials DC and UE the monogram for the Upsala Ekebey pottery studio. Ebay and auction price comparisons for similar items range from 125-175 US dollars or equivalent prices in Euros.
Dorothy Clough is particularly famous for her whimsical ceramic designs of animals and females/ children and together with Lisa Larson she is regarded as the foremost Swedish designer in this genre. Her work is housed in museums of applied and decorative art in Sweden and Scandinavian counties. Dorothy Clough was born in England in 1930 and graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland in 1953 . She moved to Sweden in 1954 on a scholarship and was apprenticed to the Gefle factory in Upsala Ekeby as a ceramic designer. Her talent was quickly recognized and she worked for Gefle until 1957, whereafter she freelanced as a designer for both Gefle and Upsala Ekebey ceramic studios.
