About This Order/Medal | The Order of the Red Star was instituted by the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR on April 6, 1930. Both the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Star have the same establishment and statue dates. The order was designed by V. Kupriyanov and V. Golenetsky. Statutes for award of the order were instituted on May 5, 1930 with the first order awarded on May 13, 1930 to Civil war hero, V.K. Blukher. At first, the order was awarded to high-ranking officers and officials. The Order of the Red Star was an order of the Soviet Union, given to Red Army and Soviet Navy personnel for "exceptional service in the cause of the defense of the Soviet Union in both war and peace." The order was also used as a long service award, until the establishment of the Irreproachable Service Medal in 1958. |
