Offered for sale is a rare early work by famous Italian designer Piero Fornasetti (1913-1988) , one of six plates designed for the series Strumenti Musicali . This is no 2 from the series. It is a transfer/decal printed polychrome earthenware item hand painted which depicts antique musical instruments in this case stringed instruments which are depicted against a faux wood grain /faux bois background in a technique emulating the tromp l'oeil painting style of Dutch and French 17th/18th century artists. 6 musical instruments are depicted in an attractive overlapping design which which fans out to fill the entire surface of the plate . The instruments include a Balalaika, Lute, Mandolin and Viola. The back of the plate has the famous Fornasetti backstamp in a transfer print which reads Fornasetti Milano Made in Italy and the studio cypher of a hand holding a paintbrush .
