EXTREMELY RARE original ZASM and UDF marked matching set of railway/ locomotive lanterns.
The lamps carry the stamp of the ZASM "Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij" (South African Railway Company), previously the Dutch South African Railway Company, which was the ZAR/Transvaal's railway before the Boer War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetherlandsSouth_African_Railway_Company
One lamp also carries a brass numeral "4" indicating that this set may once have belonged to locomotive no 4, one of five 14-ton, class 0-4-0 locomotives manufactured for the NZASM by the Maschinenfabrik Esslingen in 1889:
The lamps were made by the Dutch metal and lighting manufacturing company of Becht & Dyserinck in Amsterdam. The company was founded around 1867 and in 1878 was renamed to the "Nederlandsche Fabriek van Bronswerken v/h Becht en Dyserinck". It changed to "Bronswerk" in 1946.
They also carry SA Union Defence Force markings, indicating they became Union of SA military property after 1912/13.
Today only one ZASM 14-Tonner 0-4-0T of 1889 (No 1) remains, at the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George.
The two lanterns do not have their glass lenses anymore and the lamps inside are missing. The only other surviving ZASM lantern I know of is in the Baberton Museum and this one that was for sale online: https://vintik.co.za/ad/railway-lantern/
