Offered for sale is an exceedingly rare Pretoria Potteries earthenware bowl made in Pretoria between 1926-1929. This is a rare example of functional utilitarian pottery made locally at the same time as the Ceramic Studio (forerunner to Linn Ware) which  was launched in 1925. Pretoria Potteries ceramic items have a distinctive speckled  pale mustard colour and are undecorated . This piece is typical of the bulbous shape of a mixing bowl with a large round base, and footring and a deep well. The makers marks are impressed in the base ie Pretoria Potteries. Examples of this type of pottery are housed in the University of Pretorias Museums department the De Kamper and Welman Collection which has a fine collection of antique Chinese and South African ceramics. According to the art historian Wendy Gers in her book Scorched Earth 100 years of Southern African Potteries , Pretoria Potteries traded for only 4 years between 1926-1929 when the company was sold to Globe Potteries. Pretoria Potteries was preceded by Milton Pottery which was established in 1915 in Pretoria and which made teapots Rockingham and Samian type and functional items based on models from Trent Pottery in England.
