 SAAF 6 Squadron (Impalas) Plaque

6 Squadron of the South African Air Force (SAAF) was first formed just before World War II and underwent multiple disbandments and re-creations until its final disbandment in October 1990. Initially formed in Cape Town in April 1939, it was equipped with Westland Wapiti IIIs. During the early days of the war, the squadron conducted anti-submarine coastal patrols. In 1942, it was re-formed at Swartkop with the Curtiss Mohawk IV. The squadron was again disbanded in 1943 after the threat of a Japanese invasion of Madagascar was averted by the Allied invasion. It was reformed in 1952 as a citizen force unit, flying Harvards from Port Elizabeth. In 1961, it was resurrected, flying Harvards and later receiving Impala Mk Is in March 1975. These Impalas remained the operational aircraft until the squadron's final disbandment in October 1990.
