The platter is intended as a wall hanging and has two small round holes at the top which would have been threaded with a corded white rope for hanging. Oiva Toika 1931-2019 is one of the most famous Scandinavian /Nordic designers of studio glass and ceramics. He joined Nuutajarvi in 1963 where he worked closely with Kaj Franck as a glassware designer. He was previously employed at Arabia as a ceramic designer. His design work is characterized by an inventive and imaginative approach with a bold use of colour ,playful and quirky designs influenced by folk art and peasant culture as well the influence of antiquities and highly stylized ancient art forms; his designs were not typical of the streamlined functional modernist and pared down aesthetic more commonly associated with Nordic designers. Oiva Toikka is perhaps best known for his iconic hand made range of glass birds designed for Nuutajarvi and Littala as well as some of his press molded glassware designs such as the Flora pattern for Littala.
