This extraordinary vintage Shiwan ceramic set offers a rare and richly detailed interpretation of the Eight Immortals a central theme in Daoist legend and Chinese decorative art. Unlike the standard eight-figure groupings typically seen, this composition features twelve individually crafted figures: eight seated Immortals and four additional standing counterparts, likely students or disciples. These extra figures are respectfully positioned and actively engaged observing scrolls, pouring tea, or listening intently suggesting scenes of learning, storytelling, or ritual instruction.
The figures are crafted in classic mid-century Shiwan style, with expressive faces, dynamic gestures, and hand-applied sancai-style glazes in muted tones of ochre, celadon, indigo, and white. Each pair is arranged into a cohesive tableau reading, conversing, or presenting symbolic items all mounted on a fabric-covered base. Although the original wood stand and storage case are no longer present, the piece remains visually complete and structurally sound, with remarkable continuity and character across all figures.
The full piece measures approximately 36.2 cm in length, 8.1 cm in width, and 9 cm in height. All twelve figures are in perfect vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs a rare find for mid-century Shiwan ware of this complexity. While not part of the estate collection featured in several other current LouzAttic offerings, this piece complements that range beautifully in both theme and craftsmanship.
In Chinese culture, the Eight Immortals (Ba Xian) are revered as symbols of harmony, health, and good fortune, each representing a different facet of life. This extended interpretation showing some of them not just as legendary figures, but as teachers passing on knowledge adds both narrative depth and spiritual resonance.
A unique opportunity to acquire a collectible with both cultural and artistic weight. Whether you're a collector of Chinese ceramics, a fan of Shiwan ware, or someone seeking a truly one-of-a-kind decorative piece, this set is both meaningful and visually captivating.
