This is a beautiful and rare hand-painted Russian wooden egg with genuine gold leaf detailing, created in the latter half of the 20th century. It features a detailed icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, surrounded by vivid scenes from his life, all carefully painted in traditional Orthodox Christian style. The egg is mounted on a black wooden stand and measures approximately 17 cm tall (egg only), or 26 cm including the stand, with a width of 12.73 cm at its broadest point.
The image of Saint Nicholas is finely rendered, with the saint shown in his bishops robes, holding the Gospel and offering a blessing. Around him are miniature painted scenes from his life, arranged in a circular pattern in the style of classic Russian religious art. The central halo and background are decorated with real gold leaf, giving the icon a soft, glowing quality. The egg is covered in a clear lacquer, which has developed an even craquelure (fine surface cracking), typical of older lacquered pieces. This adds a beautiful, aged character and confirms the eggs vintage authenticity.
At the base, the piece is signed S. Ushkova, indicating a named artist, something uncommon in these types of devotional works. This signature, combined with the craftsmanship and materials, suggests the egg is both unique and highly collectible.
