Rare Silver Georgian '1798' Nutmeg Grater (By Ford & Slater)

This superb, very rare, 18th century, English hallmarked travelling silver nutmeg grater (with contents), was made in Birmingham in 1798 by silversmiths 'Ford & Slater' (F.S), a very scarce maker whose items seldom come on the market. The small rectangular shaped silver box with canted corners, has an internal, silver framed and hinged steel grating grid with storage space underneath for the nutmeg seeds. It is plain with no decoration except for an engraved 'CR' monogram on the lid and other than a minor dent on the back, it's in great condition with nice clear hallmarks, good hinges on snug fitting lids and comes complete with aged contents, a nutmeg seed along with two dark brown items, possibly very early pieces of vanilla sticks. This wonderful nutmeg grater is not only a rare piece of Georgian silver but was also made by a rare silversmith 226 years ago. It measures 42mm x 30mm x 20mm and weighs 32g.

NOTE: Silver nutmeg graters were used during the 17 & 1800's by the wealthy, for storing and grating precious nutmeg seeds, primarily used as a spice to enhance the flavour of punch and other warm drinks.
