This rare A/UNC 1929 specimen
carries the load of very depressing history
Notice the 1/1/31 (1 Jan 1931) graffiti on the reverse:
It all started with The Great Depression (1929-1934) which originated with the USA stock market crash of 1929.
The Bank of United States lost over $160 million in deposits and was the fourth largest bank at the time. Its failure is widely considered to be the moment of the banking collapse in the United States.
As the rest of the world, South Africa suffered from 1929 to 1934. Some 7 million people starved to death in the Great Depression due to mainly malnutrition.
People were reportedly eating their leather shoes, rodents and pets to survive...
This one-of-a-kind specimen has seen it all!
