A rare Springer knife with Rich. A. Herder - Solingen tang stamp. D.B.G.M. on bolster. A Rosenthal (PTY) Ltd etched on blade. Attractive dark jigged bone scales are attached with brass pins to the double layered steel liners making a very heavy and robust knife. Excellent snap on opening, lock engages on opening. Second spring is broken and needs to be replaced for the knife to "spring" open via the press lever. Please note these knives have two springs. Tension usually causes the outer spring to break over time. Perfect restoration candidate, a high value knife. 115mm closed // 195mm open.
A large variety of folding knives were produced in Germany during the post-WWII period. Many of these knives were tailored for use by hunters and campers. Commonly, these hunting knives were advertised under various German names like Springer, Springmesser, Jagdspringmesser, or Federmesser. Among U.S. outdoorsmen and collectors, this knife became known as the Leverlock.
