There is a view among some enthusiasts that Stanley made this slightly reduced size jack plane specifically for school woodwork classes. It is a bit shorter than the standard No. 5 Jack Plane and is the width of the No. 3 Smoothing Plane. This obviously makes it easier to use than the standard No.5 and it could also be set up for smoothing work.

 

Unfortunately, this particular plane has suffered damage on both sides of the body (possibly from some unruly schoolboys), but is otherwise a good collectors piece.

 

This plane was made in the USA and the cutter was made in England. Please see photos for indication of condition.
