Rare Victorian 'Mourning Woven Hair' Watch Chain (C.1870/80)
This incredible, Victorian 'Mourning Hairwork' fob watch chain is made from beautifully braided or woven human hair, with white metal, probably silver, mounts, T bar and catches. Attached is a silver English hallmarked pocket watch key, and a Victorian silver gilt coin (1885 NEWFOUNDLAND 20 CENTS). This amazing piece of Victorian mourning jewellery is in great condition and measures 46cm in length.
Note: Mourning jewellery represents a connection to a deceased loved one, and dates to the 16thcentury, but it became popular, and more fashionable by Queen Victoria, after the death of Prince Albert in 1861. Antique pieces have now become very collectable.
