For your consideration, a rare vintage framed lithograph print titled “Westminster Hall & Abbey” by English artist John Gendall and engraved by D. Havell that was originally published in January 1819. This is a vintage print of one of the London series of aquatints by multiple artists published by Ackerman from 1817-1819. The bottom left corner of the print reads “J. Gendall, Delft” and the bottom right corner reads “D. Havell sculp.” John Gendall, born in 1790, was an English Draughtsman and painter who began his life working as a servant in Exeter. When his drawing talents became evident, he was sent to London in 1811 where he began working for publisher Rudolph Ackerman. He became the firm’s draughtsman for aquatint engravings and a developer of the new art of lithography. Ackerman’s artists, including J. Gendall, produced some of the finest colored lithographs of that time. Between 1817 and 1819, Gendall worked on a series of London views which were published as aquatints. He found increasing success as an artist up until his death in 1865 and left a lasting legacy on the English art world. While modern prints of this lithograph are readily available, vintage prints are hard to find.
