These images depict the Development and Testing Stages of the Top Secret Welman X Class Midget Submarines. This program was initiated and developed in late 1942 - by S.O.E Section D (Technical Division) under Commanding Officer: Lt. Colonel John Dolphin.
This was primarily for the delivery of explosive charges below enemy Ships and to allow for Harbour sabotage. The Welman Submarine & associated Welfreighter (infiltration and supply vessel) - were designed and assembled by personnel from Station IX Technical Division.
The Experimental Craft, were tested at the Queen Mary Reservoir, Staines and at a secret facility in St. Albans. Further research was conducted at Weston-Super-Mare , regarding the Welfreighter and included a Sea Trials Unit at Fishguard in Pembrokeshire. This was to determine the mission viability of the explosive charges functioning after delivery by submersible craft.
These Submarines were found suitable for Operational use, and preparations for Operation Barbara II / VP101 - were set for November 1943. The Sabotage objective was to sink shipping in Askvoll Harbour in German-occupied Norway. Two craft - weighing 910 kg and each carrying a 193 kg Torpex explosive charge- were dispatched and manned by 2nd Lt. Larsen and Sgt. Hansen , Cpl. Olsen , Sgt. Kayser , and Sgt. Akslen.
The initial observation portion of the mission was beset with mechanical issues- with one craft having been discovered by Norwegian fishermen. This resulted in cancelation of the mission- on 31 December 1943 and abandonment of the craft. All personnel were safely evacuated and returned by rescue craft to the United Kingdoms- whilst the submersible were captured by the Kriegsmarine.
The ideal addition to any RARE, Special Operations Executive - World War 2 Era Photographic memorabilia collection or display- for the enthusiast seeking a unique period piece for their assortment.
