THIS 12 PIECE EARTHENWARE SET WITH THE RARELY SEEN BUT VERY BEAUTIFUL KINGFISHER PATTERN WAS DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED BY W.H GRINDLEY & Co, ENGLAND BETWEEN 19536 AND 1954.
EACH PIECE IS STRIKINGLY HAND PAINTED (PLEASE SEE PHOTOS) IN WONDERFUL DETAIL WITH ARTIST INITIALS AT BACK.
ALL THE PIECES APART FROM THE CUPS HAVE MILDLY FLUTED SIDES AS WELL AS GENTLY SCALLOPED RIMS DECORATED IN GOLD TRIM.
THE SET INCLUDES: A SERVING TRAY OR MEAT PLATTER: 31,5CM x 25,5CM OVAL REGRETTABLY A NASTY CHIP ON THE LEFT HANDLE. TWO SOUP BOWLS OR SERVING DISHES. ONE HAS A LID OR COVER WITH A BEAUTIFULY SHAPED AND DECORATED KNOB. SIZE 25CM x 23CM 5CM HIGH ALL IN GOOD CONDITION. FOUR CUPS AND SAUCERS. SAUCERS 16CM DIAMETER CUPS 8,5CM DIAMETER 7,5CM HIGH. SAUCERS ALL IN GOOD CONDITION. ONE CUP HAS A RIM CHIP. ALL CUPS HAS SOME GOLD GILDED LOSS ON RIM.
MARKINGS: A CROWN, SAILBOAT AND A SHIELD WITH TEXT GRINDLEY MADE IN ENGLAND THIS MARK BY GRINDLEY WAS USED BETWEEN 1936 AND 1954.
GRINDLEY ENGLAND:W H Grindley was an English pottery company that made earthenware and ironstone tableware. The company was founded in 1880 by William Harry Grindley (b. 1859) of Tunstall Stoke-on-Trent. W H Grindley was taken over by Alfred Clough in 1960 and became known as Grindley of Stoke in 1978. The company went into receivership in 1991 and was taken over by Woodlans Pottery. Pattern books and records from 1880 to 1930 are in the Stoke-on-Trent City Archives.
