Re/discovery and Memory:

Sydney Kumalo, Ezrom Legae, Serge Alain Nitegeka & Edoardo Villa

Edited by Elizabeth Burroughs and Karel Nel

Catalogue of the exhibition, Norval Foundation, Cape Town, 2018.

Major retrospectives of the work of both Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae were shown alongside an exhibition of their friend and colleague Edoardo Villa. The Kumalo and Legae retrospectives, the first to be undertaken by any institution globally, drew together a considerable body of work: a series of bronzes and drawings chronicling their innovative artistic practices. The Villa exhibition focused on the work he produced in the period of 1958-68 and was centred around his monumental sculpture Africa (1958). Serge Alain Nitegeka created an immersive installation in Norval Foundations atrium, supported by the Claire and Edoardo Villa Will Trust.

Contributions include:
"Post-War Johannesburg: crucible of artistic transformation" by Elizabeth Burroughs and Karel Nel
"Edoardo Villa" by Amalie von Maltitz
"Sydney Kumalo" and "Ezrom Legae" by Elizabeth Rankin.
