GRAYS OF CAMBRIDGE: Founded in Cambridge, UK, in 1855 by World Racquets Champion Henry John Gray, racquet sports have long been at the heart of the now GRAY-NICOLLS Sports business and is still owned and run by fifth generation Gray family members. In 1941 the HJ Gray & Sons company merged with the cricket bat manufactuer LJ Nicolls to become Gray-Nicholls. The brand became internationally renowned and Grays racquets quickly became the choice of leading players around the world. Quality craftsmanship was the catalyst behind Grays becoming market leaders during the 1960`s and 70`s. This quality attracted the world`s finest players and to this day no brand has won more British Opens than Grays. In the first ever live TV squash match covered at the British Open, both players in the Men`s 2000 semi-final, Paul Price and Mark Chaloner used Grays racquets.
DUNLOP: Dunlop was established as a company manufacturing goods from rubber in 1889 & entered the sporting goods market in 1910, when it began to manufacture rubber golf balls at its base in Birmingham then extending into tennis ball manufacture in 1924. In 1925, F A Davis was acquired, which had tennis racket manufacturing expertise. Fast forward to the 21st Century and the Dunlop brand is now owned by SRI Sports, a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo Rubber Industries. WOODEN RACQUETS: The first wooden tennis rackets were used in the 1890s and have been used for over a 100 years. But by the 1980s wooden rackets had been largely replaced and they are now rarely seen.Although they are not as common as metal and graphite rackets, wooden tennis rackets are still being made today. Grays is the only firm that still manufactures them. They are now the only known active maker of wooden racquets in the world.
