Academy Award winner Hilary Swank stars in Red Dust, an intense political thriller set during South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation hearings, one of the most significant instruments created to heal the wounds of the apartheid atrocities.
Human rights lawyer Sarah Barcant (Swank) returns from New York to her childhood village in South Africa to work on the case of Alex Mpondo (Chiwetel Ejifor). At the centre of the case is Dirk Henricks, who is seeking amnesty for the terrible acts of torture he committed as a police officer under the apartheid regime. Once part of an illegal anti-apartheid movement, Alex was imprisoned and tortured for 31 days by Dirk. Due to the almost fatal beating he endured, Alex's memory is foggy and he is unable to remember whether he denounced his friend and comrade Steve Sizela, who was in custody at the same time. However, it soon turns out that there is much more at stake than the almost fatal beating, and Alex is afraid of what the trial may reveal, under cross examination, about his own behaviour.
