Hughes and Welfare, producers of the "Red Empire" television series, survey the history of the Soviet Union from the early days of the revolution to 1985 with an emphasis on domestic events. They reinforce the clearly written and remarkably unbiased text with more than 200 black-and-white photographs and eight pages of colour illustrations. The result has the overall effect of a television documentary translated into print. It is informative to the general reader, entertaining, and accurate, although rather superficial. Unfortunately, coverage ends with Gorbachev's rise to power in 1985. Readers will find neither discussion of perestroika nor, in spite of the subtitle, historical revelations not generally available in previously published sources. A suitable but marginal purchase for public and school libraries. -- James R. Kuhlman, Univ. of Georgia Lib., Athens
