JILL ADAMS (1932-2016):
Jill Adams is a South African artist who has specialised in natural history illustrations. She was born in Durban in 1932, but lived for part of her life in Kimberley, where, on the staff of the McGregor Museum (1974-1983), she published her illustrated Flowering Plants of the Northern Cape (1976). She achieved public renown for her paintings of Aloes.
She subsequently collaborated with ornithologist Richard Liversidge making their book, The birds around us: birds of the Southern African region (1990). The illustrations produced for The birds around us have been described as "the product of her outstanding draughtsmanship, coupled with a keen sense of observation and knowledge of the "natural pose" of birds." In order to keep the collection in the Northern Cape most of the original paintings were purchased by the Gant family and donated to the McGregor Museum in 1991. Jill Adams lived in Somerset West until her death in 2016.

SWALLOW TAILED BEE-EATERS:
The swallowtail has a preference for honeybees. They get the name bee-eater because they often eat bees and wasps and their tail is shaped like that of a swallow.. These bee-eaters nest as pairs or in very small colonies in sandy banks, or similar flat ground. They make a relatively long tunnel in which the 2 to 4 spherical, white eggs are laid. They also feed and roost communally.
The swallow-tailed bee-eater is a delight for birdwatchers from across the globe. Its a common African semi-migratory species and easy to spot thanks to its striking colours. This gorgeous medium-sized bird has a deeply forked blue tail and a green body, with a patch of yellow on the throat. A blue collar divides the throat and breast. The bird has the typical black eye stripe. Male and female birds are identical and usually reach a length of 20 to 22 cm.
They prefer semi-desert savanna scrublands of Southern Africa but is a semi-migrary bird depending on rainfall conditions.
