During the Vietnam War the US MACV-SOG conducted clandestine operations behind the North Vietnamese border, as well as operations in neighboring Laos and Cambodia - at the time these missions had to be kept secret as it was technically against international law.
The SOG team's gathered intel on supply routes used by the NVA and VC along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, captured enemy combatants and officers, wire tapped communications lines, conducted sabotage and rescue missions for captured POW's, amongst many other things.
Because of the clandestine nature of their missions, almost all of their equipment was "Sterile". Meaning it was removed of all tags and any indicators that would suggest it was American equipment - so that incase of capture or being killed, the enemy forces would not have real evidence of American activity and the US government could deny responsibility. The SOG "Sterile" uniform was born from this need - but also paved the way for modern BDU's.
The SOG Teams would use the standard OG-105 uniforms given to other GI's, remove tags, but also move bottom pockets from the jacket onto the sleeves (just like modern day BDU jackets have!), they would also often spray paint their own version of "Tiger Stripe" onto the green uniforms to replicate the pattern the South Vietnamese Army had, before they were able to get their own.
While this IS a replica uniform it is still unique. The real ones are as rare as hens teeth, so for any Vietnam Era collector, or specifically MACVSOG collectors, this is a good substitute for the real thing. It is also a perfect option for any re-enactors.
