According to Herns’ Handbook on South African Coins and Patterns (2020:109) the R5 pattern piece was sold by the South African Mint, at a special evening function, by auction in 2005. The piece was housed in a special R5 set of coins (2003, 2004, 2004CW (Oom Paul) and the pattern itself). It sold for R6 500 and the current catalogue value is R20 000.
