An unfortunate result of such a diet is that the hypothalamus ensures that the abnormal, problematic fat reserve remains protected and unavailable for metabolic purposes. When you start a very Low Calorie Diet, the first fat to burn is therefore the normal fat reserve, followed by structural fat, and only then will the body start using the abnormal, 'emergency' fat reserves. However, most dieters never make it to the last stage: they feel famished and unwell because of food deprivation and give up their diet long before the body starts metabolizing its abnormal fat reserves.
