Resistance by Owen Sheers
It is a powerful work of alternate-history fiction set during the Second World War. The novel imagines a chilling scenario in which Germany successfully invades Britain after the D-Day landings fail. The story takes place in a remote Welsh valley where the men have mysteriously disappeared, apparently having joined a local resistance movement. Left behind are their wives, including Sarah Lewis, who must struggle to maintain their farms and survive the harsh winter. When a small group of German soldiers arrives and occupies the valley, an uneasy coexistence develops between the occupiers and the women. As Sarah forms a complex relationship with the German officer Albrecht Wolfram, the boundaries between enemy and ally begin to blur. Both sides are forced to confront questions of loyalty, humanity and survival in circumstances that challenge their assumptions about war and identity. Fair condition. Softcover, 23cm x 15.5cm, 289 pages.
