Offered for sale is rare/hard to find example of Axella studio pottery made in Denmark in the 1970's or 80's. This is a stoneware beaker or chalice vase which appears to be slip cast from a mould and hand finished. The cup of the beaker has a rough chamotte ,bark like texture on the exterior glazed a dark umber brown while the interior has a speckled oatmeal fat lava type glaze as a bold contrast. The foot of the vase seems to be an unglazed rough textured stoneware in a rich chocolate colour. The base is clearly marked with the imprint Axella Design the model/form number 2519 and the word stentoj ie stoneware.
Axella was founded in 1970 in Norresundby Denmark by Aksel Larsen and closed down in 1987. Most of the designs are attributed to Jette Helleroe the studios principal designer .
