Retro Ruby Red Sparklets Globemaster Soda Siphon (circa 1960-1981) with Iconic Ball Shape

WHAT A COOL LOOKING BALL SHAPED SODA SYPHON IN A RETRO RUBY RED COLOUR. PRODUCED BY THE BRITISH OXYGEN COMPANY (BOC) WHICH OWNED THE SPARKLETS BRAND IN ENGLAND FROM 1960 TO 1981.
 
THE GLOBEMASTER RANGE WAS INTRODUCED TO THE MARKET IN 1960. IT FEATURES A UNIQUE, SPHERICAL (GLOBE) DESIGN, DIFFERENTIATING IT FROM THE MORE COMMON 'TEARDROP' SHAPE OF THE HOSTMASTER MODELS. THE BODY IS TYPICALLY PAINTED ALUMINUM, IN THIS CASE, RUBY REDE, AND FEATURES CHROME FITTINGS, INCLUDING A LONGER SPOUT.
 
The Globemaster was designed to be approximately twice the capacity of its predecessors, holding a larger volume of water and consequently requiring two standard Sparklets CO bulbs (chargers) to properly carbonate the contents.
 
The Sparklets Globemaster soda siphon was produced in a range of nine retro colors plus white for a total of ten known variations. The available colors were: Apple Green; Champagne Brown; Diamond Blue; Emerald Green; Old Gold; Royal Blue; Ruby Red; Topaz Orange; Wedgwood Blue; Milky White (described as a rare variant).
 
Like all soda siphons of its era, it was a common household item used to produce carbonated water for popular drinks like a whisky and soda, which were fashionable in the 1960s and 1970s. The siphons were produced throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s until all Sparklets siphon production ceased in 1981.

SPARKLETS SIPHONS:
The soda siphon (sometimes spelled syphon), also known as the seltzer bottle or siphon seltzer bottle, is a device for storing and dispensing carbonated beverages while maintaining the internal pressure, thereby preventing it from going flat.
The modern siphon was created in 1829, when two Frenchmen patented a hollow corckscrew which could be inserted into a soda bottle and, by use of a valve, allowed a portion of the contents to be dispensed while maintaining the pressure on the inside of the bottle and preventing the remaining soda from going flat.
The first Sparklets glass syphon was made in 1896. As it contained water gassed by the Sparklet bulb, it was covered in wicker as a safety measure. All subsequent glass syphons were covered in a steel wire mesh. This mesh prevented glass from dispersing in case of an explosion and also helped to grip the glass more easily.
The first metal syphons were made by Sparklets Corporation in the USA and UK starting in 1936. All had 3 coloured bands, and were either finished in chromium plate or coloured enamel. They are instantly recognisable by the plastic cover on the sparklets inlet and by the chain attaching it to the syphon head. Base Markings: Sparklets Corporation New York
Soda siphons were popular in the 1920s and 1930s. The rise of bottled carbonated beverages and the destruction of many of the siphon manufacturers' plants in Eastern Europe during World War 2 led to a decline in their popularity in the years after the war.
Classic bottles wrapped in metal mesh are still commonly used in some bars to make drinks, and are used to enhance a period ambiance in traditional fine dining venues
