Rhaphiolepis indica Seeds

Indian Hawthorn

Indian Hawthorns are compact evergreen shrubs that grow 1 to 1.5m in height, eventually forming a mound that is about as wide as high.

This species is a native of Asia, especially India and southern China, grown for its decorative pink flowers, and is popular in bonsai culture. The oblong leaves are thick and leathery with serrated edges. They are dark green on top and lighter on the bottom and 8 to 10cm in length. The leaf size is quickly reduced with regular pruning and pot constriction.

Star shaped fragrant flowers are held at branch tips in loose clusters and are white to pink, with five petals. Flowers are followed by blue-black fruits which provide food for berry eating birds. The fruit is edible when cooked, and can be used to make jam. Dark blue, turquoise, and purple dyes are obtained from the fruit. They thrive in well-drained soil whether in sun or part shade. Avoid overhead irrigation, especially at night. Usually Indian hawthorns are quite rugged given proper conditions. Provide average moisture, this shrub is drought tolerant once established.
