Rhipsalis is a genus of epiphytic cacti. They are typically known as mistletoe cacti. Rhipsalis is one is part of the tribe Rhipsalideae within the subfamily Cactoideae of the Cactaceae. Rhipsalis is found as an epiphyte in tropical rainforests, some species may also grow epilithic or, rarely, terrestrial. The genus is found widely in Central America, parts of the Caribbean and a great part of northern and central South America. The center of diversity of Rhipsalis lies in the rainforests of the Mata Atlantica in southeastern Brazil. It is found throughout the New World, but additionally in tropical Africa, Madagascar and Sri Lanka. It is the only cactus with a natural occurrence outside the New World.
Rhipsalis cereuscula native to Uruguay and Brazil, forms small light green stems crowned with clusters of tiny “rice” shaped joints. White to pinkish satiny flowers. Erect at first, but becomes pendant as size increases. Excellent hanging basket. This plant, as with all Rhipsalis, prefers filtered light and more humidity than other cacti. Soil should be largely composed of organic material, such as peat or sphagnum moss. Water thoroughly when soil is dry on surface, but should not be allowed to dry out completely. Prefers nighttime temperatures no cooler than 10°C, especially in the winter, and daytime temperatures to 27°C. Protect from frost.
