Rhodes - A Life was published in 1927-25 years after Rhodes death - and ran to numerous editions. Sir James was encouraged by Kipling to write it. Sir James having been a business associate, close friend and confidant of Rhodes for some twelve years, his work is distinguished for the intimate personal light it throws on his character and career, particularly during the last six years of his life when he devoted much of his time to Rhodesia. It has more of the human touch than most other published works. A second book from the pen of Sir James, Rhodes - A Heritage, was published within weeks of the authors death.
