Rhodes - Sarah Gertrude Millin

Mrs. Millins remarkable biography of Rhodes has already - before publication - received the highest praise, and from no less an authority than General Smuts himself. This is his verdict :

What a picture of the great man : I find Rhodes nowhere swamped in the details, but every chapter is dominated by him, and his great bizarre figure stands out ever more clearly as the book proceeds. Vivid, vivacious, enormously interesting I find it from beginning to end. I am sure it will be a great success. I find it written in the right spirit -he is treated objectively like a natural phenomenon, where praise or blame is equally difficult. The book will remain the classic on Rhodes. This is not a mere biographical pamphlet, but a serious historical work -which paints a great picture of a great man in a great way.

Further comment is superfluous. In her book, Mrs. Millin gives us both Rhodes the man and Rhodes the great figure and empire-builder ; of her accuracy and execution there can be no more impressive judge than General Smuts, and few, if any, better qualified to form an opinion.
