Rhodesia and Nyasaland Penny (1955) and Half Penny (1958) Bronze Coins with Distinctive Central Holes

ON AUCTION IS A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF RHODESIA AND NYASALAND BRONZE COINS WITH THE DISTINCTIVE HOLE IN THE CENTER.

HALF PENNY BRONZE COIN FROM 1955 (QUEEN ELIZABETH II).

ONE PENNY BRONZE COIN FROM 1958 (QUEEN ELIZABETH II).

RHODESIA AND NYASALAND BRONZE COINS, PARTICULARLY THE PENNIES AND HALFPENNIES, FEATURED A DISTINCTIVE HOLE IN THE CENTER.

These coins were part of the coinage system of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, which existed from 1953 to 1963. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was a political entity that included present-day Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi. The federation issued its own currency, the Rhodesia and Nyasaland Pound which included various denominations.

Bronze pennies and halfpennies were produced with a hole in the center. They were first issued in 1955. The hole was a common feature in coins of that era and was a practical design element, likely inspired by older Chinese coins and other coins from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. IT ALLOWED COINS TO BE STRUNG TOGETHER, MAKING THEM EASIER TO CARRY OR STORE, ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY NOT HAVE HAD POCKETS OR PREFERRED TO KEEP THEIR COINS ON A STRING OR CORD.

While the higher denomination coins are popular with collectors due to their attractive reverse designs, the pennies and halfpennies with holes are also sought after for their historical significance and the story they tell about the era.

CONDITION: PLEASE SEE PHOTOS.

NOTE ON THIS WEEKS CRAZY WED AUCTION I WILL HAVE SOME INTERESTING COINS OF SOUTHERN AND EAST AFRICAN BRITISH COLONIES OF THE PAST.

SOUTHERN RHODESIA; NORTHERN RHODESIA; NYASALAND:
Southern Rhodesia was a self-governing British Crown colony in Southern Africa, established in 1923. It existed as a territory south of the Zambezi River and north of the Limpopo River. Prior to 1923, Southern Rhodesia was under the administration of the British South Africa Company, which had been granted a Royal Charter in 1889.
The British South Africa Company (BSAC), founded by Cecil Rhodes was granted a charter by the British Crown in 1889 to administer and develop territories in south-central Africa. It primarily focused on acquiring land and mineral rights, establishing infrastructure like the Rhodesian railway system, and administering what became Southern and Northern Rhodesia.
South Rhodesia gained self-governing status in 1923 after a referendum which saw the white settler population vote for self-governance rather than joining the Union of South Africa.
Southern Rhodesia later formed part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1953-1963) with Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi). The federation was formed to foster closer political and economic ties between these territories - it aimed to utilize resources like copper in Northern Rhodesia and exploit labor in Nyasaland, while also creating a larger market.  Following the dissolution of the Federation, Northern Rhodesia became Zambia, Nyasaland became Malawi, and Southern Rhodesia declared itself Rhodesia. Southern Rhodesia, then simply known as Rhodesia, unilaterally declared independence in 1965, which however was not recognized internationally. The country eventually achieved internationally recognized independence in 1980 as Zimbabwe.

Queen Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She had been queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime and was the monarch of 15 realms at her death.
