The sword and attached bits and pieces belong to 6019 Superintendent Winston Sakkie McKay who served his entire career with the Dog Section and Support Unit.. As a member of the tracking team he worked alongside RAR and RLI follow up teams as early as 1967 right through to Mount Darwin in 1976. He was one of only a few members of the BSAP to attend the Army Tracking school at Kariba. before transferring across to the Support Unit. He was a Troop Commander and on promotion he was appointed as the Unit Chief Inspector(the most senior Chief Inspector in the Unit) On promotion to Superintendent he was a field Officer responsible to JOC and the deployment of several Support Unit Companies. He was awarded the RGSM and Police Long Service medal.In civilian life he ran the up and down legs of the Comrades and several shorter marathons .He assisted with the writing of the Support Unit Book The Blackboots and a signed copy is with the collection as are several photographs (15) (with Dog Section and Support Unit), his medal ribbon, crossed rifles and other BSAP Badges depicting his ranks, a Support Unit Tie and Comrades Tie .and a Golf winners Tray. He was an excellent sportsman representing the Police at Rugby Cricket, golf and football .He ended his Service with the Support Unit in 1980 with nearly all of it on Operational duties. A fine Officer.
The sword is in excellent condition although there is surface rust on the inside of the Hand shield Photo 3 shows this
