ON OFFER HERE A RHODESIA GOLD TEN SHILLING 1966 ANTELOPE IN ORIGINAL GREEN LEATHER RESERVE BANK OF RHODESIA, SALISBURY 1966 BOX
WEIGHT: 3.994 GRAMS OF .916 FINE GOLD
THIS IS A ONE YEAR TYPE ONLY.
THESE COINS WERE STRUCK FOR THE RESERVE BANK OF RHODESIA AT THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINT IN PRETORIA.
ON NOVEMBER 11 1965 RHODESIA WAS DECLARED, BY PRIME MINISTER IAN SMITH, TO BE AN INDEPENDENT DOMINATION. THIS LED TO SANCTIONS BEING IMPOSED BY BOTH THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AND THE UNITED NATIONS AS THE UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (UDI) WAS NOT RECOGNIZED AS LEGITIMATE.
IN 1966 THE 'REBEL' RHODESIAN GOVERNMENT DECIDED TO ISSUE A SET OF GOLD COINS TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF UDI.
THE GOLD TEN SHILLING IS ONE OF THE THREE DENOMINATIONS STRUCK (BEARING A SABLE ANTELOPE ON THE REVERSE).
ALL THE DENOMINATIONS WERE IDENTICAL IN WEIGHT, SIZE AND GOLD CONTENT TO THE BRITISH SOVEREIGN, HALF SOVEREIGN AND FIVE POUND COIN.
THIS IS A VERY SOUGHT AFTER COIN AND WOULD BE AN ASSET TO ANY COLLECTION.
