During the Rhodesian Bush War, the air force consisted of no more than 2,300 personnel and of those only 150 were pilots.  A Wing Commander usually commanded a squadron or a wing.  New Sarum Air Force Base was a major military airbase located near Salisbury (now Harare), the capital city of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). It served as a key air force base for the Rhodesian Air Force during the war.
