The Rhodesian Light Infantry, or R.L.I., was was one of the most elite units in the Rhodesian Army, known for its anti-terrorism expertise and "Fireforce" tactics. The unit was divided into four commandos, with Support Commando being one of them, organized for rapid reaction and specialized operations.
Composed only of white recruits, the First Battalion Rhodesian Light Infantry was formed within the army of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1961 in Bulawayo. The R.L.I. was at the forefront of the so-called Bush War or Second Chimurenga, the armed struggle by nationalist guerrillas against the white minority government of Rhodesia from the late 1960s until majority rule in 1980, when the country became known as Zimbabwe. Following majority rule, the regiment was disbanded on 1 November 1980.
The regiment was assembled into a headquarters and four company-sized units called commandos: One, Two, Three and Support Commando (each commando with ± 100 men). As a premise, a commando could have five troops (military sub units similar to platoon) of which only four troops were normally activated.
Support Commando had a history dissimilar to all the other units and had been called Support Group for the era prior to 1976. Support Commando came from the original Headquarters Company; consequently, they had some additional skills and resources.Support Commando had a Headquarters and four cross-trained Troops: Mortar, Assault Pioneer, Anti-Tank and Reconnaissance, so every commando was a similar size (4 troops). They provided the battalion with supporting fire and specialised resources in both conventional warfare and counter insurgency operations. DIMENSIONS: 10CM HIGH 13CM WIDE UP TO HANDLE
