Preface

“In 1931, at the height of the depression when nearly two million men were unemployed I travelled to Southern Rhodesia. There I joined the mounted section of the police.
I have attempted to record in this book impression of people, and events that for thirty years made up my life, and the kindness and fellowship that was food fortune to receive and enjoy, an for which I am truly grateful.
In the world of today, rent with mistrust and suspicion, I can honestly say I have found, apart from very rare occasions, good in men, rich and poor of all races. If this mistrust and suspicion could be put aside for ever and men deal with their fellows in a spirit of courtesy, understanding and goodwill, this earth on which we love would indeed be paradise.
The events recorded in this book are true: many of the people are no longer alive, in some cases they lie buried in forgotten graves in the sands of the western desert, and other failed to return from mission while serving with the R.A.F.
Time passes rapidly and in writing this book my thoughts have been with humble men who played a part in the changing face of Africa, a continent, that like myself, the loved. “
