The Rhodesia Regiment was one of the oldest and most significant regiments in the Rhodesian Army. It had a rich history, having served alongside the United Kingdom during the Second Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, and later the Republic of Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Bush War. The regiment was initially created in 1899, primarily drawing recruits from Matebeleland as a mounted infantry formation. Many of its early members came from the Southern Rhodesian Volunteers. The regiment saw action in the Second Boer War and was disbanded shortly after the relief of Mafeking in 1900.
During the First World War, the 1st Rhodesia Regiment was formed in 1914 and took part in the South West Africa Campaign. A 2nd Rhodesia Regiment was also formed and sent to British East Africa. The regiment's affiliation with the King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) led to many similarities in uniforms and titles. In 1947, due to its service in World War II, King George VI granted the title of Royal Rhodesia Regiment to the unit. However, when Rhodesia became a republic in 1970, the title reverted to Rhodesia Regiment.
The regiment underwent various changes and expansions over the years. During the Second World War, members of the regiment were absorbed into British and South African military units. The regiment played a significant role during the Rhodesian Bush War, fighting against guerrilla forces. Following the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965, the regiment consisted of several territorial army battalions and national service independent companies. The regiment was disbanded in 1980, marking the end of an era in Rhodesian military history.
