Rhododendron is a genus of 1,024 species of woody plants in the heath family, Ericaceae, either evergreen or deciduous, and found mainly in Asia. Most species have showy flowers. The genus name is derived from the Ancient Greek words rhódon meaning rose and déndron meaning tree. Both species and hybrid rhododendrons (including azaleas) are used extensively as ornamental plants in landscaping in many parts of the world, including both temperate and subtemperate regions, while many species and cultivars are grown commercially for the nursery trade.
Rhododendron concinnum is a rhododendron species native to Guizhou, Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Yunnan in China, where it grows at altitudes of 2300–3000 meters. It is a shrub that grows to 1.5–3 m in height, with leaves that are oblong, elliptic, ovate, oblong-lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 2.5–7.5 by 1.5–3.5 cm in size. Flowers are deep purplish red. It also makes a beautiful container plant and bonsai. |
