Common Names: Baboon Grape, Bobbejaan Druif The grape family (Vitaceae) is a large, with approximately 1000 species spread throughout the warm countries of the world and is famous for its most celebrated member, the grapevine, Vitis vinifera. In southern Africa this family is represented by five genera (Ampelocisssus, Cayratia, Cissus, Cypostemma and Rhoicissus) and 53 species. Rhoicissus digitata or Baboon Grape as it is commonly known is a vigorous climbing woody shrub with glossy trifoliate leaves which occasionally are bright red. The branches are heavily covered with brownish red hairs. This plant is very well suited for pergolas or as a ground cover. The shiny bluish-purple-black berries are relished by birds. It will grow happily in sun or shade but requires a well drained position. It responds well to applications of organic fertilizer.
