Purpurite comes primarily from Sweden, but can also be found in Germany, France, Nambia, Brazil & the US. The best specimens are produced in Nambia.
It is found in phosphatic iron ores, pegmatites and hydrothermal veins.It is classified as a phosphate mineral and receives its purple hues due to the presence of manganese.
It was discovered in 1905 by a Swedish mineralogist.The name purpurite comes from the Latin word purpura which simply means purple.
