Richard Ambrose Reeves: Bishop of Johannesburg 1949 1961
by Frank Donald Phillips (Hardcover)

June 1995

Richard Ambrose Reeves was appointed Church of the Province of South Africa (Anglican) Bishop of Johannesburg in 1949, a year after the Nationalist Party's accession to power. Reeves' career is assessed against the background of apartheid and its implementation between 1949 and 1961. One of the main arguments in this dissertation, therefore, is Reeves' opposition to racist ideology and the legislative apparatus in the light of his own theological background and beliefs.

An attempt is made to evaluate Reeves' social and religious influence in the broader context of South African society, with special emphasis on his views about the nature of Christian reconciliation, both as an expression of individual Christian faith and in terms of social reform.

Reeves' formative years in Britain and the influence of the Community of the Resurrection at Mirfield profoundly affected his ideas about evangelism, social welfare, racial segregation, education and housing. It is argued that this theological training shaped his later attitudes to apartheid, and especially its effects on African lives.

His opposition to separate Bantu education, forced removals of African communities in the Western areas of Johannesburg, the injustice of the Treason Trial and the police shootings at Sharpeville in 1960 form the main contours of this dissertation. Confrontation between Church and State was therefore an important feature of Reeves' career and was held in uneasy tension with his attempts at reconciliation.

Reeves' deportation by the South African Government in 1961 dramatically ended an eleven-year episcopate characterised by controversy and increasingly acrimonious relations between the Anglican Church and the Nationalist Government, especially during the Verwoerd era.

Historiographically, the dissertation also explores the intersection between church history and the broader social history of South Africa during the first phase of apartheid (1949-1961). It attempts to bring religious impulses back into social and cultural history discourses.
