His Death in 2017 has increased his value by threefold.

Richard Alexander Rennie, master water colourist and living legend of the art world, was born on a farm in the midlands of Rhodesia in 1932. He started painting at the age of 7 under the influence of an uncle who was Chief Art Professor at the University of Cape Town.

Richard held his first art exhibition when he was 18 years old. Since then his paintings have spread throughout the world into private homes, hotel rooms and boardrooms as well as the corporate collections of major companies such as SAA, Anglo American, Barloworld, Plascon, Tongaat Hulett and Mediclinic to name a few.

After Richard completed his schooling in Salisbury (Harare), he moved to Natal where he spent 3 years studying Graphic Design at the Durban Art School with major distinction. This launched him into a very successful career as a commercial artist in the pre Letraset, pre personal computer age.

Nine years in the corporate world were enough for Richard and so he returned to Rhodesia and opened his first art gallery, in Salisbury. Here, although being an accomplished oil painter, he found his passion in watercolour. This medium suited his impulsive nature, allowing him to spontaneously commit his ideas to paper and he has since established himself as one of the finest watercolour artists in South Africa.

By 1987 Richard was so successful an artist that he sold his galleries in order to paint full time. He was now living in Kloof in Natal where he took full advantage of the magnificent natural landscapes and to this day there are few who can capture the moods of the African sky as Richard Rennie can.

It was during this period that he decided to share his passion with other artists and so started the first Artist's Retreat in South Africa, in Nottingham Road. Since then Richard has hosted retreats and held workshops all over Southern Africa. After all this time he is still one of the most sought after watercolour demonstrators, inspiring and influencing many local artists over the years.

Richard moved to the tiny village of Clarens in the Eastern Free State Highlands in 1990 where he opened one of the first art galleries in the area, the Richard Rennie Gallery. The gallery has relocated a few times within Clarens as this very popular art route has grown. The Richard Rennie Gallery houses a quite astounding range of this very active artist's work in both style and media.
