Riverdale was named after the local Magistrate Harry Rivers. it Lies on the Banks of the Vet River a western tributary of the Kafferskuils River 9 (Today it is  the Goukou river) near the foot of the Langeberg Range. The local Dutch Reformed parish was established on the farm Doornkraal in 1939. The town was proclaimed a municipality in 1949.
